Memorial Day Weekend

We were busy little beavers this Memorial Day weekend!

Friday:  Roxborough State Park

James took a half day at work so as soon as he got home we headed out for a late lunch and then Roxborough.  I have been avoiding this park because although I knew it was beautiful it is also the area where Sarah lived and you have to drive right through the accident site to get there.  I decided to overcome it though and boy am I glad I did.

See what I mean?  It’s just gorgeous there, the pictures don’t do it justice.

Saturday:  Kitty Cat Maintenance Day

Thomas got neutered and all 3 cats got microchips for a grand total of $25!  I’m so glad we have a great resource like the DDFL for neutering, otherwise it’s so expensive.  The microchipping was all done for free courtesy of a grant given to the state of Colorado for a cat microchipping program.  Could the money probably be better spent on other programs like human healthcare?  Probably.  But I’m glad we didn’t have to pay for it, I mean if it’s there why not take advantage?

Sunday:  Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, Spinney Mountain State Park, and Fargos Pizza

The fossil beds were very cool, there were fossils as well as petrified trees.  We were able to listen to an excellent talk by one of the park rangers and I feel like I learned a lot!  On our way into the park there was a preserved homestead which was very cool as well.  It started pouring as we were going to take a walk to the fossil sites so we will have to go back and do that another time.  Spinney Mountain was ok but we ended up on the wrong side of the lake and never made it around to where we intended to go.  Supposedly you can see 10 of Colorado’s 14ners from this park but it was too overcast, we couldn’t see anything except Pikes Peak.  We wanted to check it out in case we ever want to camp there.  Fargos Pizza is a yearly visit for us, it’s a place James use to go as a kid, a funky pizza place with an old timey theme and a game room.  Unfortunately Gracie started having some serious stomach pain not long after our dinner came so we ate fast and took off.  We’ll have to go back for games and our yearly photo booth photo.

In spite of the weather not being great and Gracie not feeling well we had a nice day.

Monday:  BBQ at our friends house

We enjoyed a great cookout with Dino and Terry and a few of their other friends.  The kids had a great time and it was a very nice way to celebrate the day even though it was chilly and rainy again.

The manian taz devil

Last night at about 2am I sat bolt upright in bed due to the bloody murder scream that came over the monitor. (Yes, we still use a monitor. We have to keep all the bedroom doors shut at night due to nocturnal kitty activity and we all use white noise machines to sleep. It gives us all peace of mind to use the monitor.)

Anyway......I literally jumped up and ran down the hall, Gracie was screaming for me and I wanted to get her out of there before she woke Ian up. I got in there and she came to the edge of her loft bed and practically jumped on me. Uff... I got her in our room, pulled out the futon pad we keep tucked under the bed for situations like this, got her re-tucked in and we both went back to sleep. I'm pretty sure she was up for awhile though because she slept til 8:30 which for her is like sleeping til noon.

Tonight she tells me she's too scared to sleep in our room and she finally tells me her dream last night was about the "Manian taz devil". She said he is a bad guy and she's afraid of him because he eats woodland creatures and he got into Bugs Bunnys hole. In her dream he apparently came into our house and she's afraid he will come back and she knows he can get her because he can knock down trees so he might come in her room and knock her bed down.

How do you argue with that? It's pretty sound logic.

We had a long talk about how he's a cartoon and he can't hurt her or anyone else but she said she's still scared because he comes in her dreams and she can't tell herself it's pretend.

Again, pretty sound logic.

So Gracie is sleeping in our room tonight, back on the futon pad on the floor. I'm hoping this passes quickly since we can't really spare our room at night, James needs it to do his homework. A night or two will be ok though. She's really not one to have night time fears like this.

I have to say, her sincere tears of fear coupled with her calling him the manian taz devil was pretty cute. She's growing up so fast.

And with the arrival of the summer-like weather has come lots of activities!

Since my last post the kids both finished and passed their swim levels and have started another round of lessons.  Ian is now a Minnow (level 2) and Gracie is now an Orca (level 4).  I am very proud of both of them.  Ian is the youngest in his class this time and is getting comfortable with putting his face in the water and holding his breath when he dunks and bobs.  He’s also learning to float.  Gracie is in the deep end this time, she is officially able to swim without touching the bottom of the pool and she can do an entire length of the pool on both her back and her tummy.  She’s learning backstroke and front crawl.   She LOVES it, she is really a natural swimmer.  She’s the most brave in her class this time, she is the only one who will jump off the race platform without hesitation, and she’ll do it as many times as you let her.  It’s pretty awesome in my opinion.

I have started physical therapy for my ankles.  I don’t like it and I’m not as consistent with the exercises as I should be.  I need to be more disciplined, but routine exercise is definitely not my forte!  And I have to admit that I’m doubtful this is going to work.  I really think it’s just a matter of time before an ankle cracks again.  And when it does I will have surgery and then that should be the end of it!  Of course I’ll have to have physical therapy if I have surgery so I guess no matter what I should just get with the program!

Last Friday Gracie had her first sleep over with James parents.  She really had a wonderful time and loved spending time with them.  The only bump in the road was with bedtime, she worked them over pretty well and managed to stay up hours past her normal bedtime!  The result was a very grumpy and bi-polar 5 year old the next day.  When we drove her home that evening she was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde the entire hour long commute.  It was pretty nuts!!  I gave grandma some hints on how to handle bedtime for the next sleep over and I’m sure it will go much better.

Lastly, and what a better way to end a post about summer, here are some pictures of the kids and the new pool I got them.  I went for the biggest hard pool I could find this time, hopefully it will appease them for at least two summers and then *fingers crossed* we will have a yard we can put a larger swimming pool in.  Because we have to take it down after every use a blow up pool just isn’t practical at all.  I’ll be so glad when we can have something bigger.

I filled this baby up and the kids went round and round and round, down the slide, along the pool edge, up the stairs.

Over and over and over.

For about 3 hours.

They slept very well that night!!  Yay for summer!!!

Dog Day Afternoon

Yesterday afternoon we hit the Cherry Creek State Park dog run area.

This is what Maggie looks like pre-creek activities.  She was clean and basically smelled ok.  Like a dog, but ok.

Then we found water.

We actually found a lot of water.  The creek is still running very high from the late snow and now all the rain we’ve had and parts of the path were flooded.  It made for lots of fun though!!

See, here’s part of the path completely underwater!

The kids surveyed the situation for awhile.  Then they came up with a plan.

“Let’s just play”  they said.  Because, after all, that is what they do best!

So they found a ball for Maggie to chase and played fetch for awhile.

And amazingly Maggie played along!  It seems our non-retrieving retriever has decided that retrieving can be fun.   Maybe she decided that now that she’s 5 she’ll finally start acting like a Lab.

Ian pretended he was shooting bad guys from Star Wars.

Then both kids decided to fish.

We all tried to stay out of Maggies way.

She acted like she had no idea what we were reacting to.

Then the kids built a campfire,

fished some more,

and acted like monkeys.

I took in the view and was very thankful for the gorgeous day.

On the way back to the car the kids chased their invisible pet chihuahuas,

and interviewed each other about their lives.

That was very entertaining as you can imagine.

Then again, with goofs like this around, it’s the rare day that isn’t entertaining!!!

She turned 5 today!!!

I can't believe it, but she really turned 5 today. In fact she was born at 10:30something pm, so right about now. Crazy!!!
We had a very good day. We started out bright and early with present opening. She got some great stuff. A huge box of dress up clothes, a bunch of awesome 1970's Barbie blow up furniture (oh how I love Goodwill), some new books, a prince and princess puppet, a couple games, and a Hannah Montana CD. All things she will get a lot of use out of I'm sure!

After spending the morning trying on a bunch of the clothes we got dressed and headed out to our local museum and hung out with my good friend Kendrah and her kiddos. We had lunch together and played a little longer, then headed home for a quiet afternoon. Once James got home we headed out for dinner at Gracie's restaurant of choice, McDonalds! After that we headed over to Cold Stone to get her free birthday ice cream. Then a quick run to Costco to pick up the sandwiches and some beer for her party tomorrow (we have a lot of adults coming too, don't worry, we won't give the kids beer), and then we came home. A couple phone calls had to be returned, one to my dad and one to auntie April and then off to dreamland for the kids.

Tomorrow is the party. I'm sure I'll have a ton of pictures to post from that.

So my Gracie girl, I love you so much. I can't believe how big you are. I'm so proud of you, you are such a sweet girl. You are strong and kind and smart, you make me glad to be a mama every single day!
